Instruction for OS 10.4+ don’t know about earlier or later OS but figure knowing Apple there is only slight variations…
Easy if you have a built in modem and land line connection you just select the document or item you want fax.
Command+P for print and in the dialogue box select fax from the drop down menu on the left hand side that will be indicated with a downward pointing arrow. A dialog box will open asking you to fill out the phone number and once you have filed out the form appropriately you hit enter or the fax button and your done. You will see a modem/printer application launch and show the status of your fax as it is sent. Afterwards you will not see any confirmation other than the fact the queue is empty. If you want to make specific action you go to System Preferences>Print&Fax and make your selections there.

In addition to the above answer, most macs no longer include a built in modem, but you can pick up a cheap USB one from any apple store or dealer.
